How does it work to remove pond muck?

The strains of natural bacteria and enzymes in Muck Remover are selected specifically for their need to digest organic muck to survive.  These bacteria aggressively digest fish waste, dead vegetation, leaves, and other decaying organic matter.  As the pelletized bacteria dissolve the biological activity on the pond or lake bottom is increased dramatically.  As the muck is digested, the potential for hydrogen sulfide (the source of the rotten egg smell) and other harmful gasses to accumulate in the pond are reduced.  After long-term treatment, the pond or lake bottom muck is gradually converted to a fine grained, more compact soil.  Muck Remover can digest up to 6" of organic muck per treatment season when applied every other week.

What is muck?

Muck is the accumulation of broken down vegetation, fish waste, and other organic matter. Muck contains high levels of the nutrients Nitrogen and Phosphorus. These nutrients feed weeds and algae. Muck also releases gases into the pond. Bubbling methane and hydrogen sulfide generate noxious odors near the pond or lake.  Years of muck accumulation can eventually fill in a pond.

Why should I treat with Muck Remover?

Muck Remover is designed to consume pond bottom muck. This is a natural, safe way to remove muck from the pond. Lowering muck levels is one step towards proactive pond management. Mechanical muck removal (dredging) is costly, treating with Muck Remover pellets are a less expensive alternative.

Pond Muck Pellet Review

Can these muck pellets be used in a lake around the dock?

One of the most frequent uses of the Muck Remover is to digest muck near docks on lakes. The product is in pellet form so it can be applied directly to the treatment areas. Treating dock and beach areas is a very effective way to decrease odors and improve access to the water.

Is Muck Remover safe for ponds where kids and dogs swim?

Muck Remover is safe for fish, wildlife, livestock and pets. This is a natural beneficial bacteria that has no water use restrictions.

Will Muck Remover work in a pond without aeration?

Yes, Muck Remover will still work in a pond without aeration. We recommend treating in a well aerated pond because Muck Remover is comprised of oxygen loving bacteria. In an oxygen rich environment, the Muck Remover will yield better results.

Where does the muck go?

Nutrients from the organic muck are released as gas, leaving a soil-like byproduct behind.

Can Muck Remover or Pond Cleanse cause an algae bloom?

No. These treatments do not contain nutrients and work to reduce the compounds that cause algae blooms. These are bacteria and enzymes designed to bind/break down nutrient in water.

What is the shelf life of Muck Remover?

5 years

What our Customers Say: Muck Remover Pellet Reviews

AMAZING product!

We have a 1/2 acre swimming hole/pond in southeast Idaho. The pond gets up to 12 feet deep, with an average depth of 6 feet. Most of the shoreline is gravelly with dirt and clay mix. The bottom of the pond is the same. Some of the shoreline is sand, which we brought in from some local sand dunes. Our pond developed slimy, mucky areas which were disturbing to walk on. Our guests were creeped out by the slime spots and grab-your-feet muck spots. I applied muck remover enzyme tablets though out the pond and saw (felt) dramatic results within a week of the first application. I apply Muck Remover once a month during the swimming season to ensure a muck-free shoreline and pond floor. It's an amazing product! I also use pond dye along with the muck remover tablets to help keep the pond water clear and "inviting". We get lots of compliments on our swimming hole because of the use of the products. BTW, we stock the pond with trout fish and the muck remover and pond dye don't negatively affect the fish at all. It's also safe for swimming in, and safe for the cows to drink the pond water. - M. Crain

Slow but Effective Pond Treatment

The pellets didn't work for the first treatment, just did a second treatment. They were easy to toss in the lake. -a month latter there was a big difference. Over a foot of muck is now a few inches. We mixed up our part of the lake with a boat motor, and that helped a lot. -Renee

I’m switching to this product PERMENANTLY

I have had a koi pond for 5-6 years now. It is all natural with filtering through a bog, plants, etc. I have been using a different brand of natural bacteria and a sludge remover that turns my water brown for a day or so when you add it into your pond. The company I was using had a dark brown sludge remover and you have to add it weekly to your pond. I have also been using this other manufacturer's fall and summer packs as well. I have had fair results with this other company I'm referring to, but I was spending a lot of money. I have already bought 2 of their sludge removers this year at $50 a pop. I decided to try these muck remover pellets by Natural Waterscapes, when I saw them referenced in an article and I am completely sold! It's been about a week since I put it in my pond and I disbursed it rather heavily b/c my plants are just now emerging from winter, so they aren't up to speed yet on filtering. The pond was pretty murky before I put the pellets in, but now I can see the bottom, as well as all of my pretty fish!. I am very, very happy with this product!!! Good stuff that works!!! -MS CD

From a Retired Retail Water Garden Store Owner

I've used and sold numerous water garden products over the years. Unfortunately, not this one. We're on a pond tour this summer, and of course had the worst spring weather possible with lots of debris falling into the pond. Super cloudy and murky, with tons of debris and yuck in pond. No way other than a second complete pond cleaning to fix it, and no desire to drain and clean as koi had been spawning for about a month. Decided to give this product a test drive. We have a fairly good-sized pond (6000+ gallons). So if it worked, it would be much more cost effective than other products I thought of using. After a month of using it, we're close to being back to a normal, crystal clear pond. There are still some places that need more treatment, but going from not even being able to see a fish swimming to being able to see the bottom, and rocks at bottom, we're almost there. It worked amazingly well. Kudos to Natural Waterscapes Muck Remover. Easy to use, and works as well as promised. -Waterwitchin

They Really Work

I was skeptical and they are pricey, but we started using these regularly last summer in our 1/4-acre pond. The muck has decreased dramatically. From what I can tell we started with 12-14 inches over much of the bottom and when I went in again after it warmed up this spring, I'd say we're down to 5-6 inches by what I could feel on my legs. We bought another bag and began applying as directed. Now I'd say we're down another inch or two. We'll keep after it as long as it keeps working! -NorthWings

This Works Great

I started using this muck remover at our lake property. The ground was FULL of organic muck, multiple inches thick. I started using a double dose around our dock and beach and the change has been drastic. I know it's working because branches and things that I didn't see before are now uncovered, gravel close to shore is beginning to emerge and the best of all, the water clarity is night and day difference! The lake is big enough where there is water moving and refreshing the area so I think this helps the overall performance of the muck remover. I highly recommend it!!! -T Irwin

Saved My Pond

Our pond is roughly triangular with about 40ft each side, holds about 20,000 gallons. Last November we weren't home when the beeches and oaks dropped their leaves and we came home to a pond totally covered in leaves. This spring the surface was covered in green slime in part an inch deep. Hardly any open water left. I scooped out several dozen gallons of slime and hardly made a dent. I was devastated. I feared for the frogs and fish. I looked into filters (would be $1000s) until I came across this product and their companion water cleanser to clear the water. I applied both (I erred a little on the generous side by about 30%) and after 3-4 weeks all slime was completely gone. The water is clear again. The fish and frogs are doing well. I'm amazed and very grateful. -Mick in Maine

It Works

Every spring I rake out seaweed (pond weeds) by my dock and throw in the aerator and begin immediate treatment with muck removal pellets. After ordering another brand for the last 2 years and noticing little improvement, I tried this brand. I do 20 lbs for 30' x 20' area. I started this year with 4" of muck after the weed removal. I am now down to hard packed sand. If this formula stays the same - they'll have me a life long customer. We recently added sterile carp to help with the pond weed. They grow from a tiny 8 inches to 2 feet and are voracious right now eating. We worked with the DEC to get them stocked to the right ratio. This combined with proper aeration and the fish should make for a wonderful swim next summer. -MW

Excellent Product

Our pond was reverse draining in from the surrounding fields fertilized with cow manure for 3 years before we figured it out. The WinterGuard product was helping clear up the insane algae but we ran out. I put this product in back in March when the water was cold (~40F). It didn't do a whole lot. Then we got some warmer days and it cleared up in a matter of days. The results are amazing! -Jeremy Clears Like a Charm I have a 1/3 acre old farm/cabin pond ... it was cloudy like tobacco spit. I started putting Muck Remover pellets in about a year ago -- tossing a bunch around the pond every two weeks or so -- and now the pond is clear -- I can see about 5-8' down. Works well. -James Wilson Lives up to Description Amazed how well these worked and relatively fast. Cleared clogging blanket week from 1/2 acre pond. Put these in. Within one week of high summer temps, pond started going back to clear mode. Be aware that initially, these pellets will cause some additional opaqueness, churning up of sediment. Don’t be discouraged. Within a week, a visible significant improvement. Also, wildlife (birds, dragonflies, etc ) now back and happy. Easy to apply, tossed by fistfuls twice in one week. Still have more than half left. -Lydia It’s making a Huge Difference in my Pond Instead of chasing the duck-weed with chemicals after it appears I've taken a different approach this season and went after the muck that feeds the nitrogen and explosive duck-week growth. It's thus far had a major impact not only reducing the duckweed, but improved the overall clarity of the water as well. I started applying it in March as soon as the water reached 40+ degrees. So far so good! -Mike B

it works well

as it ate up the gunk it was stinky. the pond smelled like low tide as the muck was consumed by this product but in a few days it cleared up. Haven't seen the bottom in months. Probably need to use it again. It took a toll on the fish but they are recovering well now. -Suzar Sachs Does the Job The house I bought came with a 19,000 gallon pond that had been neglected for a few years. It's been a challenge finding a good product that comes in a large enough package that will give me the dosage I need. So far I am happy with this product, so much that I just ordered my second bucket. The water is very clear and I can see all the way down to the bottom. I do partner this product with an algae control and as far as I can tell, this product is doing the job it promised. -Pooped Mom

Effective Pond Treatment!

I have used this product for about 3 years in a water feature that was neglected for years and had 2 to 3 feet of muck under about 5 feet of water. In that time period, manual removal, an aerator, and the muck remover tablets has reduced the muck to roughly 12 inches. - D. Jelaw

It works, takes some time, but it works

I can't believe it, we are now in a dry season and I can see further into the pond to the bottom than when the water is high. Been using this product for 3 months now and it is working already. Planning on keeping it up because I feel it works, pond has never looked better, sandy bottom can now be seen all around the edges for about 8 feet from the normal high water line.........it works........thanks. - K. Baxter

Great product, great people!

I first used this a number of weeks ago and it has definitely reduced the amount of sludge/ muck around my dock. Just received another order for future use and will continue to use. I especially enlightened by the the “Thank you” on the box and also on the instructions. That definitely ensures another order from me, that went far and beyond just a “thanks”. -Amazon Customer

Best stuff ever!

This product is WELL worth the money. It has cleaned up a very large area of our lake property. I would recommend it to anyone looking to clean up the muck in their water front property. - Michelle T.

Great Customer Service

The seller was so thoughtful and helpful to include very specific instructions customized for the size of the pond on our property. We really appreciated the information and can't wait to see results soon! - Amy T.

Love these Pond Products!

Updating. Didn’t see a difference in water clarity but we raked the seaweed and there was no muck where I placed tabs. The smell was gone and the shore looks amazing. We raked where I didn’t place tabs and it was gross w muck. These are well worth price. Work amazing and the pack list tells you how much to use. One bucket will last the summer. - M. Decker
