Understanding Total Hardness in Pond Water

Total hardness in your pond water refers to the concentration of dissolved calcium and magnesium. This plays a crucial role in maintaining water quality, aquatic life health, and overall ecosystem balance.

Two Ways To Check Water Hardness: Complete Pond Water Test or FREE Hardness Test Strips

Impacts of Total Hardness Levels

Fish Health & Growth

  • Calcium and magnesium ions are essential for fish health. They help with bone and scale formation, blood clotting, and other metabolic functions.
  • Calcium in water reduces the loss of essential ions like sodium and potassium from fish blood.

Moderate hardness of 100-250 mg/L is ideal for most fish species. If hardness is too low, fish may struggle with osmoregulation (balancing internal salts and water), leading to stress and potential health issues. Low hardness can also lead to stunted fish growth.

pH Stability

  • High Hardness of water (along with alkalinity) helps to stabilize pH. Preventing major pH fluctuations reduces unneccessary stress on fish.
  • Low-hardness water is poorly buffered, meaning it is more susceptible to acidification or extreme pH swings, especially during high respiration or photosynthesis periods

Plant Growth and Algae Control

  • Aquatic plants rely on dissolved minerals like calcium for healthy growth.
  • Very soft water can lead to poor plant health, while excessive hardness might lead to mineral precipitation, affecting nutrient availability.
  • Some studies suggest that higher hardness can suppress certain algae blooms, but it may also encourage unwanted calcification on surfaces.

How To Increase Pond Hardness?

Pond lime can be added to improve total hardness and alkalinity of water.

Calcis liquid lime is the ideal treatment for this purpose. 5 gallons of Calcis is equivalent to 2,000 lbs of agricultural lime! It is premium quality lime and simple to apply.

On average, apply 5 gallons of Calcis per surface acre of pond. Actual rates vary based on water depth and desired hardness of water.
