Moderate hardness of 100-250 mg/L is ideal for most fish species. If hardness is too low, fish may struggle with osmoregulation (balancing internal salts and water), leading to stress and potential health issues. Low hardness can also lead to stunted fish growth.

pH Stability

• High Hardness of water (along with alkalinity) helps to stabilize pH. Preventing major pH fluctuations reduces unneccessary stress on fish.
• Low-hardness water is poorly buffered, meaning it is more susceptible to acidification or extreme pH swings, especially during high respiration or photosynthesis periods

Plant Growth and Algae Control

• Aquatic plants rely on dissolved minerals like calcium for healthy growth.
• Very soft water can lead to poor plant health, while excessive hardness might lead to mineral precipitation, affecting nutrient availability.
• Some studies suggest that higher hardness can suppress certain algae blooms, but it may also encourage unwanted calcification on surfaces.
