Phycomycin® Non-Copper Algaecide
Fast-Acting Algae and Cyanobacteria Control for Aquatic Environments
Kills algae on contact
Effective against cyanobacteria (blue-green algae – planktonic and filamentous)
Immediate visible results
Peroxide-based – safer than copper sulfate
What is Phycomycin®?
Phycomycin® is a granular algaecide powered by sodium carbonate peroxyhydrate, designed to rapidly control a wide variety of algae and cyanobacteria in ponds, lakes, and other aquatic environments. It offers a powerful oxidation-based solution without the long-term risks of copper accumulation in sediment.
When introduced to water, Phycomycin® breaks down into sodium carbonate and hydrogen peroxide, delivering a fast-acting oxidative treatment that destroys algae cells on contact.
How Fast Does Phycomycin® Work?
Results are immediate. Once applied, Phycomycin® creates bubbling and fizzing as it releases hydrogen peroxide into the water, leading to bleaching, discoloration, and rapid die-off of algae and cyanobacteria. Floating organic debris may be seen shortly after application.
Application Instructions
For best performance:
-
Apply in early morning on a sunny, calm day
-
Warmer temperatures and direct sunlight increase effectiveness
-
For thick mats or dense growth, manually break up algae to allow better contact
-
Skim dead algae after treatment to prevent decay-related nutrient buildup
-
For long-term organic waste control, follow with a muck-reducing product
Recommended Application Rates
Heavy algae growth: 20–100 lbs per acre-foot or 2–10 lbs per 1,000 gallons
Light algae growth: 2–10 lbs per acre-foot or 1–3 lbs per 1,000 gallons
Surface cyanobacteria: 100 lbs per acre
Nostoc algae: 4–10 lbs per 1,000 square feet
Do not mix Phycomycin® with other algaecides, herbicides, pesticides, or oxidizing agents.
How to Apply
Apply Phycomycin® evenly across the surface of the water using a mechanical spreader or gloved hand. For best results, ensure even distribution across the affected area.
Post-Treatment Guidance
-
Wait 48 hours between applications
-
Remove any undissolved granules from treated areas to avoid contact with people or pets
-
Reapply at the same dosage 2 days after initial treatment when targeting cyanobacteria
-
Follow with a phosphorus-binding agent (such as MetaFloc) to help prevent regrowth by locking up nutrients released from dying algae
Why Phycomycin® Works on Cyanobacteria
Cyanobacteria are especially susceptible to hydrogen peroxide. They lack protective organelles for their photosystems and do not produce enzymes that break down hydrogen peroxide, making them more vulnerable than other algae or phytoplankton. Phycomycin® provides a faster, safer, and more targeted alternative to copper sulfate without heavy metal residues.
